Faculty members of the College of Medicine at the University of Anbar, including Prof. Dr. Shehab Hamad Lafi, Prof. Dr. Haitham Noaman Eyda, Assist. Prof. Dr. Yasir Mufeed Abdulateef, and Asst. Lecturer Maysaa Ibrahim Mohammed, have obtained the patent titled (Developing a Carbon-13 Labeled Urea Breath Test as a New Technique for Diagnosing Active Pulmonary Tuberculosis).
The patent aims at developing a new method for diagnosing pulmonary tuberculosis, which is able to provide rapid diagnosis in less than (60) minutes, compared to the gold standard for diagnosing pulmonary tuberculosis, which is culture and requires (4) weeks or more to obtain results. Additionally, the method is significantly less expensive compared to the highly costly nucleic acid amplification techniques used for diagnosing pulmonary tuberculosis. Moreover, the patent aims at developing a new method that is more accurate than the traditional method used for diagnosing pulmonary tuberculosis, namely direct microscopic examination (Acid Fast Stain), as well as a method which aims at monitoring the response of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis to antibiotics.
