Under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Khalid Battal Al-Najem, President of UOA, and the supervision of Assist. Prof. Dr. Muthana Mohammad Awad, dean of the College of Science, a scientific symposium, titled "Obesity & its Effects on Human Body," was organized jointly by the departments of Chemistery and Biology at the college of Science on Jaber Ibn Hayyan Hall on Wednesday, 2/5/2018. the symposium featured two lectures, one by Prof. Dr. Sabri Al-Marsumi of Chemistry department on "Obesity between Medicine & Islamic Shariah" and the second lecture by Assist. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Nehad Jumaa of Biology department on "The Physiological & Genetic Causes of Obesity." The speakers shed light on the impact of obesity on general health, its physiological & genetic causes, available anti-obesity drugs, measurement standards, types, and consequences of obesity. The speakers also highlighted the role of scientific research in awareness-raising to this serious issue. The symposium came out with specific recommendations, notably, the necessity of conducting more research jointly with other disciplines to remedy this problem.
