Dams of Western Desert ... Fish farms and tourist attractions

In line with the calls made by the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre at the University of Anbar for the need to invest dams in the Western Desert as fish farms, to reduce water consumption in the Euphrates River and conserve water for other purposes such as agriculture, as well as investing these dams for tourism and the development of the region, as many dams maintain a good store of water for the second year in a row. Despite the interruption of the rainy season and high evaporation rates, which indicates the economic and development potential of these important projects, an experiment for fish farming has succeeded in the Abila Dam near the city of Rutba with local capabilities (the people of the region), and the site has turned into a tourist attraction and fishing enthusiasts. It is very necessary to develop this idea and work, as we have repeatedly pointed out, to establish oases near these dams and organize investment in them before they turn into a hotbed of competition and disputes to exploit their resources and potential.

It is noteworthy that the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre – University of Anbar, within its program to monitor climate change and through satellite images and field surveys, has indicated that there are great possibilities for investing dams in the western region for fish farming, increasing green areas and supporting development in the region because of the presence of good water revenues in these dams with the possibility of investing other dams in various governorates of Iraq for the same purpose, and the centre’s readiness to cooperate in the completion of hydrological studies to determine the locations of dams that can be established and determine their storage capacities. The centre has solid databases about the region through the centre’s program to monitor climate change, which was implemented within the Anbar University's strategic plan to enhance its role in serving the community and achieving the goals of sustainable development and Vision 2030.
