Discussion of a master's thesis for the student (Saffa Nadeem Abdul-Qahar)

The public discussion of the master’s thesis for the student (Saffa Nadeem Abdul-Qahar), Department of Biology - College of Science - University of Anbar, took place on Monday, October 17, 2022, at Jaber Ibn Hayyan Hall in the College of Science, about her tagged thesis:

Assessment the susceptibility profile, the genetic basis and the mechanism of antibiotic resistance in Streptococcus agalactiae

The study aimed to study the prevalence of Streptococcus agalactiae bacteria among pregnant women and the extent of their resistance to antibiotics, and to study the diversity of virulence factors and antibiotic resistance genes, and their sensitivity to some phytochemical compounds. As well as studying the effect of shikimic acid on the gene expression of biofilm synthesis genes.

This is the first study in  Al Anbar province.

The results showed GBS resistance to most antibiotics. The prevalence of virulence factors genes was in different proportions, the high prevalence of resistance genes tet, erm, and mefA, and show high sensitivity to phytochemical compounds, meaning natural compounds have a significant effect in inhibiting bacteria. shikimic acid has also been shown to be effective in the down-regulation of biofilm synthesis genes.
