Manufacturing a solar distiller for desalination and purification of water

A research team from the terminal station of the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre - University of Anbar in Haditha has succeeded in manufacturing a solar distiller for desalination and water purification.

Engineer Ghazwan Adel Abdul Wahed, one of the members of the research team, said that low-cost local materials were used in the manufacture of this distillery to be accessible to farmers and other users to obtain clean water, especially from groundwater with high levels of sulfur and salts under water scarcity conditions.

He added that the device can reduce the large waste of water for filtering purposes and rid the water of salts and dissolved sulfur to obtain high-purity water with the disposal of sediment and the possibility of obtaining quantities of sulfur that can be used as agricultural fertilizer.

The model was applied to samples of Hajlan springs sulfur water and the results were very encouraging, as (5.5) liters of pure water were obtained from a water sample with a volume of (35) liters during eight hours of solar brightness in October, compared to (3.5) liters of pure water from a water sample with a volume of (35) liters during eight hours of solar brightness in December.

The results are very good and encouraging to start the second phase of development and increase the efficiency of the device pending the approval of the centre's board of directors on the project, and the research team included Eng. Juma’a Mohammed Ahmed, station official, Eng. Ghazwan Adel Abdul Wahed, Eng. Ahmed Omar Abdul Baqi and assistant instructor Bilal Moayad Abdul Rahim.
