Satellite monitoring of dam reservoirs

Due to the mutual influence of the Tigris and Euphrates river basins on each other due to the presence of the Thirthar project, monitoring and studying climate change on one of the two river basins will affect the other as well. From here, it is necessary to study the impact of climate change or any other effects on the water resources system and the effects on the Tigris River basin are certainly affecting the Euphrates River basin, so Dr. Haitham Abdul Mohsen Afin, a researcher in the Planning and Databases Department at the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre - University of Anbar, began to monitor and study the effects on the Tigris River basin through satellite images.

Dr. Haitham Abdul Mohsen stated that satellite images showed a clear decrease in the water storage of the Mosul Dam during the period from 1-9-2023 to 2-12-2023, while the dam's water storage improved relatively through the waves of rain that fell during the month of December, as shown by the images taken until 27-12-2023.

As for the Dukan Dam, in the same form, there is a decrease in storage until December 2023, and then the storage improved clearly at the end of the month as a result of the amounts of rain in the region during the month of December, as shown by the pictures taken until 29-12-2023. . Since the Mosul and Dokan dams are the main sources of water in the Tigris River column and thus the Thirthar project, which feeds the Euphrates River when needed, it is important to monitor and study the changes in the Tigris River and it is clear that the storage in the two dams has become highly dependent on the amounts of rain within Iraqi territory and efforts must be intensified to conduct measurements and studies and develop mathematical models for the purpose of reaching the optimal system for the two rivers Tigris and Euphrates basins inside Iraq.
