Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre Begins Developing the Use of New Indices to Monitor Climate Change

Within the strategy of the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre to support the university's plans to achieve Vision 2030 for sustainable development, especially those related to the subject of climate change, and as a first step of its kind in the centre and at the level of Anbar Governorate, and the beginning of the activities of the Climate Meteorology Unit (newly proposed) in the Planning and Databases Department, some important hydrological factors in Anbar Governorate were started to be monitored using satellites, and through this technique, some indices were obtained about monitoring the vegetation cover of the region and its implications on environmental and hydrological indices. The other as shown in the chart in Figure (1), where it shows the increase in vegetation cover (EVI enhanced Vegetation index) for the first quarter of 2023 compared to the previous three years, which clearly indicates the success of afforestation campaigns and the increase in agricultural area in the region.

Also, the distribution of land surface temperatures throughout the governorate was obtained for the past four years, as shown in the diagram in Figure (2). Other weather factors will be monitored, as well as monitoring water reservoirs and water quality in them for hard-to-reach areas, and thanks to these modern satellite technologies, the field will be opened for researchers to obtain the necessary data for those areas, which contributes significantly to the study and tracking of changes in these factors and their impact on the region, as well as evaluating these indicators for a rapid and effective response to prevent disasters and manage the region's resources.
