An extensive scientific symposium at the Anbar Governorate Office on the causes of low levels of the Euphrates River and the risks of drought

At the kind invitation of the Governor of Anbar, the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre participated in the scientific symposium on the risks of drought and low levels of the Euphrates River with the wide participation of international organizations operating in Iraq and civil society organizations in addition to the relevant governorate departments.

The Director of the Centre gave a full explanation of the Centre's vision of the problem of drought and climate change and its effects, in addition to the proposed solutions that can reduce the impact of this problem. Among the ideas that have been put forward are water harvesting systems for buildings in cities and developing their use, especially since the University of Anbar is one of the leading institutions in this field and has integrated systems at the university site in addition to recycling stations. A set of satellite images of small dams in the western region were also displayed, which store large quantities of torrential water and the possibility of using it to solve water scarcity problems, such as the Rahalia Dam, which was supported by the representative of the district, who confirmed that the reservoir of the Rahalia Dam contains an excellent store of water, while ensuring its quality for use by examining samples of it. On the sidelines of the seminar, meetings were held with a number of representatives of the participating organizations and departments, and it was agreed to coordinate and discuss a number of possible joint projects.

The use of small dams in the Western Desert can also be developed as one of the most successful methods of harvesting rainwater and focus on the fact that all these projects and ideas need solid databases with a degree of accuracy that enable them to develop these projects and reduce the impact of drought with high efficiency, which is what the centre seeks.
